Daniel began formal study of voice and performance at a very early age. He was 16 at his first concert at Carnegie Hall, Del Terzo studio, in a recital performed for an audience of family and friends.

In 2001 while working as a New York City Police Officer, Daniel was called to sing at "Prayer for America" in Yankee Stadium, where his voice gave hope and strength to a nation in mourning.

We have seen how Daniel's gift of music touches people, and have come to know him as a man of courage and compassion.

Daniel's philanthropic and patriotic efforts have been recognized with more than a dozen awards and honors, such as the USO Lifetime Achievement Award, the DAR Medal of Patriotism and others.

A full-time professional singer now known as "America's Beloved Tenor",  Daniel continues to uplift and inspire in performances for his chosen charities, and in concert halls around the world.

Christmas show sold out at Carnegie Hall

December 2012: It was amazing to be back at Carnegie hall, a place that has always meant success to me as a singer. I am sure that the music world has many wonderful venues that represent "the next level" for a musician, but for me it has always been Carnegie. From the first time I walked into the building at 16 and sang in one of the studios, I felt as though I had begun a journey that would guide my entire life. I was right, and last night I returned to the place where I took a step in the direction that I travel today. Thank you to all who have shared parts of this journey, my wife, my children, my family and my friends. Daniel

Tenor Daniel Rodriguez in Naples

Then-New York City police officer Daniel Rodriguez, assigned to patrol lower Manhattan south, was driving over the Verrazano Bridge, toward the Twin Towers, the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

Suddenly, Rodriguez took a detour and decided to check in at his commander’s office. He made a left turn instead of a right. “That one decision probably saved my life,” said Rodriguez, a full-time singer who retired from the NYPD in 2004 and will perform a free concert Feb. 2 at Covenant Church of Naples. “I lost a lot of friends who were on a different road.”

Rodriguez — who grew up in a musical home with family members who nearly all sang or played instruments in Latin bands — had been tapped as the official singer for the NYPD’s ceremonial unit. Following the tragic attack on his city, Rodriguez became nationally known as the “Singing Policeman” for his televised renditions of “God Bless America.” He moved audiences with harrowing performances at what seemed like an endless string of Sept. 11 memorial services.

“That basically turned my search for a career into a calling,” said Rodriguez, who performed at President George W. Bush’s inauguration, the 2002 Winter Olympics and appeared on TV shows such as “Oprah” and “The Late Show With David Letterman.” The tenor — who had performed at Carnegie Hall at the age of 16 — put music aside when he was 19 to support his wife and children. He worked at the post office, as a cab driver and as a cook before becoming a police officer.

After his patriotic rise to prominence, then-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani got Rodriguez an audition with the Metropolitan Opera. But the audition didn’t go as planned. The conductor at the time was what Rodriguez calls a “purist.” He wasn’t willing to let someone with no formalized operatic training — a policeman no less — take the Met stage. Rodriguez didn’t even get a chance to sing before he was ushered out the door. And the disappointment opened Rodriguez’s eyes.

“All of my life, because of my ability, everything was basically handed to me — now it was going to take a little bit of work,” he said. Later, Rodriguez landed an audition with Placido Domingo, and went on to study with the famed opera singer and conductor for 18 months. Today, Rodriguez has won numerous awards for his operatic performances and has released five albums.

His Naples concert — which also stars his wife, noted soprano Marla Kavanaugh — marks his second at Covenant Church. Rodriguez performed at the church in 2011, a month after the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He moved a packed worship center of more than 600 concertgoers and emergency personnel guests with songs of faith and nationalism. “It was wonderful,” said Bill Barnett, coordinator of lay ministries for Covenant. “He has a very rich, inspiring voice.”

Review: The New York Tenors November 11, 2012

The New York Tenors Sing to Cerritos: How Ya Doin?

...The songs are proven gems and the voices did them justice without a single sour note on the night. Even an old student protester from the 1960’s like myself found the goose bumps rising and the red blood pumping at the spectacular conclusions to these old beauties. Each man had a different approach to the tenor voice; Andy Cooney was the classic crooner with the gift of gab, Daniel Rodriquez had the operatic voice with deep and rich tones and Michael Amante had a Broadway musical cannon of a voice that could reach every note and parts of south Orange County to boot....

Singers defend anthem after radio host calls it an ‘abomination’

By Samantha Jonas-Hain

While Press seems to think the song is an “embarrassment” to our country, singers including an “American Idol” finalist and an Operatic tenor, who also happens to be a former police officer who sang at Ground Zero, disagree.

To say it's an 'abomination' is shocking to us who are more patriotic,” said former NYPD officer Daniel Rodriguez, otherwise known as the “Singing Policeman," who captured the hearts of America with his stirring rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” ...
